Treat stains naturally

Whether it be for health reasons or to save money, many households have decided to limit the use of harsh chemicals for laundering and are opting for more natural choices instead. If you’re looking for ways to “green” your laundry routine while effectively removing stains and odor, then check out the following methods to naturally treat stains.

Distilled white vinegar
Inexpensive, gentle on fabrics, and safe to use, white vinegar helps remove perspiration stains and odor, as well as mildew stains, all while making your clothes whiter and brighter. Use a spray bottle to apply undiluted white vinegar to the fabric until saturated. After 10 minutes, gently scrub the material with a soft brush, and launder according to the instructions located on the care tag.

Baking soda
Safe to use on all fabrics, baking soda helps keep laundry smelling fresh, boosts detergent performance, softens fabrics, and reduces suds in front-load washing machines. To get the full benefits baking soda provides, add half a cup to your liquid laundry detergent.

Lemon juice for white fabrics
Remove yellow underarm stains, rust, and mineral discolorations from white fabrics by pouring one cup of lemon juice into the wash cycle.

Hydrogen peroxide
Instead of using bleach, grab some hydrogen peroxide to use when whitening clothes. More environmentally safe than bleach, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen, removing red wine stains, yellow underarm stains, dyes from nail polish, and curry. Simply pour one cup of hydrogen peroxide to the washer drum before adding water or clothing.

Talcum, cornstarch, or chalk
To help with oily stains caused by cooking oil, car door grease, or butter, use talcum or baby powder, cornstarch, or white chalk. Either sprinkle the area with cornstarch, talcum, or baby powder, or rub it with white chalk. Let the garment sit for at least 10 minutes for the oil to absorb, and then brush it away.

Table salt
To help fight liquid stains before they set, sprinkle table salt on the fabric and allow the salt to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Brush the garment thoroughly before washing.

By using more natural products to treat stains, you can improve your laundry routine. Another great way to ensure your laundry routine is a successful one: use quality washers and dryers. If you need the convenience of a washer and dryer inside your home, contact Appliance Warehouse today!
