Optimize your laundry routine
In large families, the laundry room looks more like a warzone, with dirty clothes strewn all over the place. It is the one room that you hope your guests don’t accidentally stumble into. And if you have kids, you know what it’s like to think you’ve knocked out all the laundry, only to walk into your child’s room to find clothes all over the floor. This could drive anyone crazy, causing them to put off the problem until “laundry day.” But, if laundry day only comes once a week, it could take you hours to sort, wash, dry, sort again, fold, and put away all the clothes.
To keep laundry from becoming a monumental task, take the following steps and you will be well on your way to optimizing your laundry routine.
Make laundry an everyday chore. Though many dread laundry, it isn’t so bad if you do it every day. This is the most crucial step you can take to keep loads manageable. It’s like doing the dishes – you don’t let those pile up after several days, so why should you let your clothes get out of control?
Organization is key. Instead of dumping all your dirty clothes in one basket or throwing them in a pile on the floor, implement a basket system. This could mean having one basket for colors, one for whites, one for workout clothes, and one for delicates to make each load a no-brainer. Or, if you have many family members, give each of them a basket to make sorting much easier.
Finish the job. Don’t throw a load in the washer and leave it overnight, since this will cause the clothes to smell musty and require more work to clean. Likewise, don’t leave clothes in the dryer or in a clean basket waiting to be folded and sorted. This only pushes off work to another day, and you’ll thank yourself later for getting the job done.
