Why you should skip line drying your clothes

With benefits like lower electric costs, longer-lasting clothing, less static cling, and being environmentally friendly, what’s there not to love about line-drying your clothes outside? You probably envision your garments gently blowing in the breeze in the fresh spring air. But, unfortunately, drying your clothes outside doesn’t always end up working out the way you imagined. Some disadvantages include:

Limited yard space – Though there are many different clothesline options to choose from, you will still need to dedicate an area in your yard to dry your clothes. This could be a problem if you have limited outdoor space.

Outside elements – Your clothing will pick up all kinds of different smells in your area, including fuel, animal odors, chemicals, etc. Plus, laundry that is line-dried outside also has greater potential of picking up outdoor pollen and mold spores, which could be problematic for those who are allergic to either.

Wildlife issues – Whether it’s birds, lizards, or flying insects making a mess of your laundry, it will definitely require you to run your clothes through the washer again.

Bad weather – You could put your clean laundry outside and head to run errands, only to have unpredictable weather quickly soil your clothing with rain, debris, or dirt.

Unhappy neighbors –
Some consider an outside clothesline to be an eyesore that could potentially bring neighborhood property values down.

Faded clothing – Though the sunlight’s UV rays are great for brightening whites, it can dull your dark clothing items, making them look old and worn.

Fines – Many communities, such as apartments and condos, and where homeowners associations (HOAs) are present, forbid clotheslines. States like Washington, Idaho, Philadelphia, and New York are not “right-to-dry” states and can give fines to residents who put up any kind of laundry poles, lines, etc., outside of their homes.

Avoid these issues by laundering your clothing inside your home any time you want!
